I'm a sucker for local eateries, especially ones that will let my kids eat for free. It gets even better...
They eat free any night of the week (with the purchase of an adult entree of course).
But even better still, Modern Grove in Phoenix, AZ has a cool vibe that's a great add to the neighborhood, not to mention a handful of meal options that are healthy AND delicious. To be honest, I never imagined that behind the burgers and mac n' cheese bites I'd find some surprisingly creative and healthy dishes.
For starters, my sister-in-law had a beautiful "Hail Kale" salad. With mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, and a spiced orange vinaigrette, it's a tangy and sassy change up to your typical salad offerings. For you omnivores, the Strawberry Chicken Salad with balsamic vinaigrette would be another tasty choice.
As for me, I had the not-quite-on-the-menu (yet completely amazing) vegetarian burger. The entree includes a balsamic- marinated portabello mushroom cap topped with peppery arugula, roasted red peppers, goat cheese crumbles, and a balsamic glaze. All that deliciousness is sandwiched in between a soft, toasted bun that's been dressed with a savory sun-dried tomato pesto. It's unlike most mushroom burgers I've tried, in that MG pays attention to the fact that vegetarian eating is an experience, not a sacrifice. I ate it open-faced (as I usually do with burgers) to save myself a few calories :)
And you bet that spicy pickle chip on top rocked it too.
On MG's current menu, the portabello burger is listed as the "vegetarian option available upon request." However, Doug Sander, Modern Grove's Director of Operations, assures me that on the upcoming version of the menu (due out by February 2015), it's going to be a regular feature.
Modern Grove also offers an array of pizzas that can be made healthier with just a few substitutions (like the Napa pizza with fig jam and caramelized onions- yum!). They do gluten-free pizzas as well.
And as if this place wasn't cool enough, MG also has a list of menu items that benefit local charities. This place has a heart for both food AND the community- a refreshing change to a North Phoenix food scene dominated by corporate chain restaurants.
My only "beef" (so to speak) is that the kids' options, while free, aren't as health-conscious as I'd like. But fear not, that new menu is going to have additional healthy choices for kids AND adults (which I may or may not have sampled). I'll keep you posted!
